Westkapelle
A village with character
Anyone visiting Westkapelle for the first time will notice immediately that this is no ordinary seaside resort. It has something unique, something rugged about it. Perhaps it is the high sea wall that protects the village from the sea, or the beautiful red lighthouse that can be seen from afar.
From Camping Zuiderduin, you can be there in no time. A short bike ride along the dunes and you're in the middle of the village. The sound of the waves is never far away here, and the sun? Fortunately, it often makes an appearance. Like Zoutelande, Westkapelle is located on the south-west coast of Walcheren, also known as the Zeeland Riviera. Here you can enjoy long days on the beach, beautiful views and a good dose of Zeeland pragmatism.
In the heart of the village, you will find a few pleasant streets with shops, cafés and restaurants. No mass tourism, just a nice stroll, an ice cream or a seat on a terrace.
Beaches with space and tranquillity
The beaches of Westkapelle are expansive, clean and relatively quiet, even in high season. You won't find rows of beach chairs, but plenty of space to lay out your towel. Perfect for families with children, for those who just want to enjoy the peace and quiet, or for long walks with your feet in the sand.
In some places, the waves are a bit rougher, but there are also quiet areas where you can sunbathe or paddle undisturbed.
Full of stories
Westkapelle has been through a lot. Did you know that during the Second World War, the village was severely damaged when Allied bombs destroyed the dyke to flood the area? You will find tangible reminders of this in the village, such as the famous Sherman tank on the dyke and the Polderhuis: a small, personal museum that tells the story of Westkapelle, from war to reconstruction. Definitely worth a visit!
